ABOUT MAYABEL'S MOVEMENT
The mission of the Empowerment Program is to provide education, employment assistance, health, housing referrals, and support services for women who are in disadvantaged positions due to incarceration, poverty, homelessness, HIV/AIDS infection, and/or involvement in the criminal justice system.
Our goal is to decrease rates of recidivism by providing case management, support services, basic skills education, housing and resource coordination that can offer alternatives to habits and choices that may lead to criminal behavior.

Improving girl’s access to education and vocational agenda over the years since I was 12, has been a passion largely because of the high rate of social ills such as abortion, early pregnancy, high dependance on men, comparison amongst ladies and more. The large potential that education and vocational training offers, through substantial and intelligent ladies in our society today is a long term positive effect for every woman.
In 2012 when I got to the university, I witness alot of social ills and indecency for ladies that got me worried about our community today and the future of tomorrow. I came accross this pretty lady from Limbe who was dating a guy around my hostel, she was so depressed and I asked her what her problem was, “I am tired Maya, am pregnant and don’t know how to go about it” her replied…..Then I asked her who the father was and she said “I don’t know”
Now I became speechless for minutes, I couldn’t help her in anyway since I was only a student but i adviced her to confined in her mum, she replied” am the only child and my mum is doing nothing for a living, we survive from the pockets of other men. I wept but couldn’t help since I was only student at the time, I asked her to keep the baby because abortion wasn’t an option. I couldn’t sleep that night , was so worried on how I could be one of the lady to eradicate this kind of mistakes amongst ladies. I raised some money from my little university savings so I could support her through the pregnancy.when I arrived her home to give her this money, I was told she died few days ago. This was the beginning of Mayabel’s movement. I started gathering ladies of my university and advising them on the benefits of education, vocational training and how to live a decent life. All this ended me an award during my final year graduation as the most well behaved student. I was encourage by this award and many orders, so I decided to bring this vision to reality and here we are today.
